Originally derived from a regular 'animate object' spell cast on a barrel, the innerworker is a construct combining the crafting and magical talents of dwarves and gnomes. Highly appreciated in taverns, they are given various nicknames ("drink buddy", "patron's pal"), and sometimes even have an official name well-known to the regulars. An innerworker stands approximately 3 ft. tall. They do not speak, but obey orders as precisely as possible.
Their beginning seems to date back to an old tale, of which there are almost as many versions as there are people who tell it. The core of the story is always the same: two talented tavern keepers, a gnome and a dwarf, once discovered a mimic disguised as a barrel, which inspired them to create the first innerworker. Since its invention in the underground cities, this automaton has been extensively exported to the surface and worldwide. It is not uncommon to find them in human cities, or accompanying halfling nomads on the roads.
